The publication of the Coalition Government’s Tourism Strategy will cut red tape, free up local businesses, and re-establish the tourism industry as a key priority for restoring the UK economy.

The bold proposals include a consultation on extending the tourist season by moving the first Bank Holiday in May to create a new St George’s Day holiday in England and St David’s Day in Wales.

The strategy will generate four million extra overseas visitors over the next four years, bringing an extra £2 billion worth of visitor spend in to the country and creating 50,000 new jobs.

Andrew Bridgen, MP for North West Leicestershire, said: "The Coalition’s Tourism Strategy will make a huge difference to the local economy here in North West Leicestershire.

“For too long, Labour ignored the vital importance of tourism whilst suffocating the industry with red-tape.

“After years in the Labour wilderness, tourism is finally being recognised as the crucial driver of our economy that it is.”

Goa and Rajasthan are high on the list of preferred wedding destinations in India for urban tourists from the United States, a top tourism official here said Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters after his return from a promotional tour to the US, Goa tourism director Swapnil Naik said the US traveller is drawn to India because of its rich history and cultural heritage, apart from its nature, wildlife, hinterland and adventure tourism.

Naik said that with Goa's sustained popularity with European tourists, mainly from Britain, Russia and Scandinavian countries, targeting US tourists would help in broadening the state's tourist base.

Sanjay Srivastava, Goa's chief secretary who accompanied Naik on the promotional tour, said that the US tourism trade fraternity had evinced keen interest in the possibility of promoting Goa as a wedding destination.

He added that the Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA) has invited the Goa government to participate in its annual convention and trade show at Las Vegas in Nevada in mid-June.

The Goan delegation's promotional tour in association with Atlanta-based AAHOA covered western American cities like Las Vegas, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

"This is a start we have made by trying to tap the US market. The last time we had gone there was in 2007. But this time we plan to build on these initial contacts we have made," Srivastava said.

Goa is already a sought after beach wedding destination. Only last month, celebrity couple Lara Dutta, a former Miss Universe, and tennis ace Mahesh Bhupathy got married in elaborate style at a five-star resort in north Goa.

Kerala Tourism and UNESCO have jointly conceived a ‘Spice Route' project, on the lines of the famed trans-Asian ‘Silk Route' through which inter-continental trade was carried for centuries, to throw open more opportunities in tourism, historical research and spice trade.

UNESCO, which had been impressed with the Muziris Heritage project, had asked Kerala Tourism to chalk out a plan for developing the Spice Route. Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac had allocated Rs.5 crore in the 2011-12 State budget for the preliminary activities of the project.

Director of Tourism M. Shivasankar met ambassadors of countries relating to spice route in New Delhi on March 4 at the initiative of UNESCO.

Apart from attracting more tourists to unexplored sites in Kerala, the project is expected to perk up spice trade — especially in cardamom, cinnamon, pepper, cloves, ginger, turmeric, coriander, cumin, nutmeg and tamarind — across the State.

The authorities want to rope in UNESCO to get the heritage tag for the ‘Spice Route' as it is essentially a journey through places connected with the State's ancient trade links with the West. The project envisages linking the State, from Thriuvananthapuram to Kasaragod, through the spice route. Spice Route will be linked to the Muziris Heritage Project, focusing on the ancient port town of Kodungalloor and nearby areas in Central Kerala, which were the epicentre of India's spice trade with the West Asia and Europe. In addition to Muziris, Thiruvananthapuram, Anchuthengu, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kochi, Ponnani, Panthalayani, Parapanangadi, Beypore, Kozhikode, Thalassery, Kannur and Bekal will be covered.

Of the 70 spices grown globally, 47 are cultivated in India according to the International Organisation for Standardisation. India is still considered the “Home of Spices” because of the quality of the fare the country, especially Kerala, produces. Spices are strewn all over Kerala's history. Alappuzha and Idukki take the top slots. Tourist statistics say over 80 per cent of tourists arriving in the two districts stay in spice plantations.
